And then he saw something else—an old acquaintance, no less. The humongous croc with shreds of blue plastic around its neck, the one that had chased them down the dam, all the way to the boat.

Sinner recalled that victory messages he received on his phone always made note of the defeated crocs’ enhancements. Those were all different except for one: all of the crocs had a very long memory.

Back than Sinner had no idea what that even meant—until he saw that monster with an improvised blue collar again. So it appeared that the bugger did not call it quits when the boat sped away, heading north. It must have swum across the sizeable reservoir, leading a posse of his more eager cold-blooded brethren and followed the escaping humans up the trail to where the burnt truck now stood, where—surprise, surprise!—a new contingent of Lord’s henchmen had just arrived. The new arrivals, it seemed, were apparently not deterred by the sad fate of their fellow gang members, or perhaps they were unaware that their prey had long been gone by that time. Be it as it may, they found themselves at the wrong place at the wrong time, running smack into the chase party that was not even looking for them.
